Porous Acoustic Ducting

S&A Industries develops and manufactures porous duct components that help attenuate resonances in engine air induction systems, HVAC and EV/Hybrid Battery Cooling systems. S&A Industries can provide a single component or a complete acoustic solution system that helps to reduce noise harshness and provide a superior sound attenuating quality. Our components and porous duct systems are used by the world’s leading automotive manufactures to help minimize noise propagation generated from the engine compartment. Our porous acoustic ducts are used in millions of sophisticated air induction systems, worldwide to reduce engine noise resonances.

Our lightweight ducts are used to cool complex Hybrid Vehicle Batteries; our duct systems not only attenuate the blower motor noise they also protect the battery from inlet airflow failures.

For the passenger cabin; S&A offers ducts for HVAC systems, defroster systems and rear cabin auxiliary blower systems that will significantly reduce the blower motor noise propagated into the passenger cabin.

Meeting many of the stringent automotive and governmental noise regulations can be achieved with our porous duct systems plus provide the customer with superior sound quality.

S&A engineering staff works closely with automotive and transportation industry manufacturers to structurally engineer porous ducts that maximize airflow, minimize pressure loss and meet NVH targets. We provide a full range of services:

  • Custom blends of raw materials for desired level of noise performance.
  • CAD design for manufacture of the full assembly including the porous duct, end fittings and connectors
  • NVH (noise vibration hardness) modeling
  • Airflow analysis
  • Pressure loss/pressure drops analysis
  • FEA (finite element analysis)
  • Compression molding, blow molding and injection molding of all components in the assembly

There are multiple advantages to using porous ducting to attenuate electric battery cooling blower noise. This type of acoustic ducting is created from permeable materials that provide continued air flow should the main inlet become obstructed thus preventing catastrophic damage to the EV battery. If liquids should accidentally spill onto the duct, our porous ducting can absorb this material before reaching the battery.

Our porous acoustic ducting can be designed and manufactured from a variety of non-woven materials. The materials can be developed to offer varying levels of performance including heat and water resistance. We invite you to contact S&A Industries today for further information about our porous ducting and how we can assist you in achieving your NVH objectives.
